AD (invite) Just over a week ago I was invited to the newly refurbished Bill’s Restaurant in my local city, Southampton, where I was able to try out a main course and a dessert from their gluten free menu. I love having a separate menu for gluten free, so that I’m not tempted by the options I can’t have!
On arrival, Bill’s was all lit up and looking beautiful. If you haven’t been before, Bill’s is located outside of the new West Quay South building (dining & leisure). We were greeted and seated at a table with a comfy sofa on one side, surrounded by lots of beautiful artwork. The theme seemed to be lots of animals, a traditional British country house feel. We were served straight away, and we both enjoyed a Saturday night drink! I went for an elderflower gin, while my boyfriend had a Budvar beer.
For our mains, we both fancied a burger! I went for the Bill’s Classic Burger in a gluten free bun with extra cheddar cheese, smashed avocado and streaky bacon. I also asked for it without the onion and spiced mayo to keep it low FODMAP. It was a really good burger, quite average in terms of the taste (I did go for well done), but the extras really made it. I think it might be better in a brioche-style bun as I personally find gluten free rolls can be a little dry. My boyfriend had a Buttermilk Chicken burger which looked very good, but sadly not gluten free!
For pudding, we both had gluten free options as there are quite a few on the dessert menu. I usually find gluten free dessert options limited so this was a pleasant surprise! I went for the Lemon Meringue Pie in a Glass – Bill’s lemoncurd cheesecake, lemon sorbet on a crushed biscuit base topped with Italian meringue. My boyfriend had the Warm Triple Chocolate Brownie –with warm chocolate sauce, vanilla ice cream and a chocolate flake. Both desserts were out of this world. Bill’s is worth a visit just for these delicious puds! The brownie was exactly how a warm, gooey, chocolatey brownie should be, while the lemon meringue pie was so so rich it was such a treat, but I was so sad I just couldn’t finish it! It might be worth sharing it, especially if you struggle with sweet foods with your IBS. It was so delicious though!
Overall we both had a lovely evening with incredible food, first-class service and we really enjoyed the refurbished, cosy atmosphere. If you’d like to visit, click here to book a table. They do a great brunch too!
Thanks again to Bill’s for inviting us for dinner!
